Dance of the Self: Movement, Experience and Identity
This Universities/Higher Ed programme invites students to explore how their life experiences and personal histories inform their artistic voice. Through guided improvisation, choreography, embodied storytelling and reflective dialogue, participants examine the relationship between self and practice, gaining tools to sustain authenticity and creative wellbeing within academic and professional environments. Each session offers space for exploration, critical reflection and growth, helping students to deepen their artistic identity and strengthen their connection to who they are as movers and individuals.

Outcomes
Participants leave feeling more grounded, connected and creatively fulfilled. They gain an understanding of how their life experiences and personal histories inform their artistic voice and the embodiment of choreography. They feel seen, heard and valued through creative expression, developing emotional literacy and confidence in personal storytelling. Sessions also encourage understanding and respect for different life experiences, strengthen connections across student and staff groups, and support emotional wellbeing, self-value and confidence in expressing personal identity through accessible and empowering movement.

Participation in all movement activities is at your own pace, with the option to observe or modify at any time.
Confidentiality is respected, personal sharing stays within the group.
Personal Item / Prop Policy:
Participants may bring a meaningful personal item to use as a prop or to keep with them throughout the class for comfort and inspiration.
This item must be approved by a member of the 1syllable team at least 72 hours before the class for safety and suitability.
Approved items will be used respectfully and returned to participants at the end of the session.
